This year’s Southern Baptist Convention will serve as a litmus test for the Republican Party and conservative ideologies. The convention, made up of evangelicals and church leaders, has shifted right, politically, and the organization has become a significant voting block for Republicans since the Obama presidency. Prominent Black pastors have threatened to or have already left the Southern Baptist Convention over racial divides. The founding fathers of Southern Baptists’ flagship institution, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, were all slave owners, and in 1861, the organization drafted a resolution that aligned its churches with the Confederacy. In 2018 Southern Baptist released a report on the role racism and the support of slavery played in its origins. Anthea Butler, professor of religious studies at the University of Pennsylvania, joins “Prime with Charles Blow” to discuss the topic.ย ย
