After his meeting with President Joe Biden, Russian President Vladimir Putin brushed aside criticism of how his government was treating a pro-democracy group in his country, by comparing them to Black Lives Matter. Russia has a long history of invoking the United States’ domestic race problem. Journalist Julia Loffe wrote in The Atlantic in 2017, that Russia and the Soviet Union have a decades-long history of involvement and exploitation of America’s race problem. The Russian efforts have gone beyond embarrassing the United States, to using race as a way to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.
