Some Republican lawmakers have downplayed, denied and dismissed the events surrounding the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. They blocked the establishment of a commission and Representative Louie Gohmert of Texas took to the House floor to question the FBI’s role in inciting the insurrection. Views associated with the events of the day are vastly different across party lines. According to a Monmouth University poll, 47% of Republicans view the events as a legitimate protest, compared to 13% of Democrats. Thirty-three percent of Republicans would describe the event as insurrection, compared to 85% of Democrats.
