“What you’re seeing now, all over the country, is an effort by police and prosecutors working with the multibillion-dollar for-profit money bail industry to stop people who are trying to reform this system and get people out of jail,” Karakatsanis says. “[They’re trying] to stop the extraction of wealth, particularly from the Black community, that the bail bond industry is doing every single day.”
