Yodit Tewolde’s Interview With Washington, D.C. Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Joel Castón Pt 1

Joel Castón is the first person to be incarcerated and to run for public office in Washington, D.C.

He grants Yodit Tewolde an exclusive TV interview from the D.C. jail where is being held at the moment. At age 44, Castón was elected as an advisory neighborhood commissioner and has spent 26 years in prison. He was convicted of murder when he was eighteen years old.

In Washington, D.C., there is not a specific ban on running for elected office while behind bars. The district, where the D.C. jail is located, has not had a representative since 2013. In July 2020, Washington, D.C. passed a bill that allows incarcerated people to vote.
