The state of Virginia has been the birthplace of a number of important people in Black history.
Three such figures were born within a 12-mile radius of each otherโDred Scott, Nat Turner and Joseph Jenkins Roberts. Scott was the enslaved black man who sued unsuccessfully for his freedom in 1857 in the infamous “Dred Scott Decision.” Turner led one of the bloodiest slave revolts in American history in 1831. Roberts helped the West African nation of Liberia declare itโs independence on July 26, 1847 and was later elected the countryโs first president in 1848.
