Black Women Earn 63 Cents for Every Dollar White Males Earn

Aug. 3 is Black Women’s Equal Pay Day.

It is symbolic because it marks the additional 214 days that Black women must work to equal what white men earned last year. In all industries, Black women on average earn only 63 cents for every dollar made by a white male, which amounts to approximately $2,009 per month.

According to research conducted by the Economic Policy Institute, Black women working in fields deemed essential in COVID-19 recovery, including doctors, nurses and EMTs, earn 11%-27% less than their white male counterparts.

Michelle Singletary, a personal finance columnist for the Washington Post, joins Charles Blow on β€œPrime” to discuss how Black women can overcome the wage gap.

All this and more on β€œPrime.”
