With states banning Black history and critical race theory, New Mexico decided to go the opposite route.
They have passed the Black Education Act, which would require schools to create a culturally inclusive curriculum. All teachers and staff will be required to take racial sensitivity and anti-racism training, and the state would create an advisory council and four new positions, including a Black education liaison, according to the New Mexico Public Education Department.
“Whether we have one or one million, this is needed. Every child deserves a quality education with the same access to opportunities and equity. We will not sacrifice equity, inclusion, representation or quality based on quantity,” said Dr. Vickie Bannerman, deputy secretary of Identity, Equity and Transformation at the New Mexico Public Education Department.
