On this day in Black history, James Meredith became the first African American to graduate from the University of Mississippi in 1963.
His journey to that moment wasn’t easy. He tested America’s ideals as former President John F. Kennedy said, “The rights of man come not from the generosity of the state but from the hand of God.”
In 1962, Meredith applied to be the first Black student in the history of Ole Miss, even though he faced opposition from the university and the state of Mississippi. The Supreme Court ruled that Meredith be admitted to Ole Miss.
“Meredith’s struggle for acceptance to Ole Miss was a flagship moment in the Civil Rights movement and a turning point in American history,” Charles Blow said.
