Highlighting 9/11’s Impact on Black and Brown Communities

BNC’s special coverage continues as hosts Nayyera Haq, Del Walters and Charles Blow, along with political analyst Atiba Madyun, discuss the aftermath of 9/11 in marginalized communities.

Haq says being Black in America is its own experience and after 9/11, and so was being Muslim. The aftermath of the terror attacks created a new reality that many people were not prepared for. β€œThe bigger change was for Muslim Americans. I don’t think that many people had a full understanding of what it meant to be Muslim in America,” says Blow. β€œI think for a lot of people in this country, it was a novelty. It was not the largest group of people, people didn’t understand the practices, and many of them didn’t have to.” Blow says Americans turned their ire to Muslims, which continued throughout the last election when the President claimed the religion hated America and proposed a Muslim ban. Madyun, a Muslim, chimes in and says 9/11 shined a brighter light on Islam, though not necessarily in the best way.
