Guilty Verdict for R. Kelly Would Speak Volumes for Black Women

Clinical psychologist Dr. Tracy Joseph and Color of Change vice president Arisha Hatch join Yodit Tewolde on “Making the Case,” to discuss the witnesses over the course of R. Kelly’s trial.

During the course of R. Kelly’s trial, prosecutors called 45 different witnesses to the stand, including 11 alleged victims, to detail cases of sexual, physical and emotional abuse with the singer.

“You’re put in the place to have to convince somebody what you know is reality, it’s disheartening,” Dr. Joseph said regarding the witnesses’ emotional toll. “Why would anybody make this kind of thing up?” Hatch chimed in and said a guilty verdict in Kelly’s case would speak volumes in the same way Derek Chauvin’s did, adding that it would be a way to show that the world is actually going to believe Black women and survivors when they come forward with abuse allegations.
