Howard University was chartered by United States Congress in 1867.
In October of 1868, under the direction of John Mercer Langston, the institution would organize its law department, charged with advocating that all people have the same opportunities and to carry Howardβs mission throughout the country. Class formally began in January of the following year.
Howard was also the first law school in the country to have a non-discriminatory policy for admissions, being among the earliest institutions to admit women and producing the nationβs first African American female lawyer, Charlotte E. Ray.
