Governor Gavin Newsom signed California Senate Bill 796 into law, which codified the descendants of the Bruce family as the rightful owners of the $75 million beachfront property.
In 1912, a Black couple, Charles and Willa Bruce, envisioned the West Coast’s first oasis for Black beachgoers, only to be driven out by the Ku Klux Klan and racist government policies.
Chief Duane Yellow Feather Shepard, one of the descendants and spokesman for the Bruce family, joins Charles Blow on βPrimeβ to discuss how the acquisition will have an impact on the racial demographics of the city.
