Rikers Island Poses Alarming Dangers, Major Crisis

BNC has partnered with The Marshall Project, a non-profit online journalism outlet focused on issues concerning the criminal legal system, to take an in-depth look at the dangers of New York City’s Rikers Island.

Rikers has a “long and dark history of violence,” says “Making the Case” host Yodit Tewolde, a humanitarian crisis that is a matter of life or death. So far this year, 12 detainees have died, at least five by suicide. Detainees say they feel incredibly unsafe, aren’t getting enough to eat and are subjected daily to inhumane conditions.

The Marshall Project’s Beth Schwartzapfel calls Rikers a place of “violence and regret,” and Osha, a transgender woman who recently spent months there, join Tewolde to describe life on the inside. Even though New York has a policy of housing people according to their gender identity, Osha was housed for months in the men’s facility.

All this and more on “Making the Case.”
