A Minneapolis ballot initiative has created dissension among activist groups over the future of policing in the Twin City.
Question No. 2 on Minneapolis’ ballot has been dubbed the “Defund the Police,” as it proposes an amendment to the citys charter that would abolish the police department. If passed, the charter amendment would establish a Department of Public Safety to prevent and reduce crime and violence, and would be managed by the mayor’s office and city council.
Black community activists who prefer police reform over the abolishment of the police department are at odds with the city’s progressive organizations.
Rev. JaNaé Bates, director of communications for coalition group Yes 4 Minneapolis, joins Charles Blow on “Prime” to discuss the initiative.
