Opening Statements in Kim Potter Manslaughter Trial

Kim Potter is the former Brooklyn Center police officer charged with first- and second-degree manslaughter in the killing of Daunte Wright during a traffic stop in April.

Her defense attorney argued today that all Wright โ€œhad to do was surrender,โ€ and that she โ€œmade a mistakeโ€ when she shot Wright instead of using her Taser.

The prosecution argued that Potter shouldโ€™ve felt the difference since her gun weighed โ€œmore than twice as muchโ€ as a Taser.

She has pleaded not guilty to the charges and faces at least a decade behind bars if convicted.

BNC chief legal correspondent Laura McNeal joins Charles Blow on โ€œPrimeโ€ to discuss this trial.
