On this day in 1913, 22 Black women formed the Delta Sigma Theta sorority.
With womenβs suffrage and welfare at its core, they emphasized academic excellence, social activism, equality and service.
Prominent members of the organization include βMaking the Caseβ host Yodit Tewolde, Roberta Flack, civil rights activist Barbara Jordan, Shirley Chisholm and Dr. Dorothy Irene Height.
Deltaβs 10th national president was one of the only Black women on stage during 1963βs historic March on Washington. Height also served as president of the National Council of Negro Women for 40 years.
