More than one million fewer students enrolled in college since the pandemic hit, which was the largest decline in 50 years.
New research from the National Student Clearinghouse revealed undergraduate enrollment fell for the second year in a row. Colleges and universities saw a 3.1% drop, which is about half a million fewer students in the fall of 2021. That’s on top of the decline of over half a million from the previous year.
Among the 2020 high school graduates, students from low-income backgrounds had disproportionately low enrollment numbers, as did students coming from high schools where the majority of students were Black or Hispanic.
