50-Year Anniversary of Shirley Chisholm Announcing White House Bid

On this day in 1972, Shirley Chisholm made history by announcing her candidacy for the White House.

A native of Brooklyn and born during the Harlem Renaissance, she was well ahead of her time as she dedicated her life to fight for the underprivileged, monitories and women with a slogan: โ€œUnbought and unbossed.โ€

Not expecting to win but rather to make progress, Chisholm sought to change the complexion of American politics forever.

She advocated for improved access to education, expanded childcare and worked to ensure domestic workers received proper benefits.

After serving in the New York State Assembly, Chisholm made history in 1968 as the first Black woman elected to Congress.

All this and more on โ€œPrime.โ€
