Guy Torry created Phat Tuesdays, a weekly all-Black comedy night at The Comedy Store on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles in 1995. For nearly a decade it gave a voice to a slew of comedians including Chris Rock and Chris Tucker.
Now, the influential comedian is releasing a docu-series with Amazon about those legendary years. “Phat Tuesdays: The Era of Hip Hop Comedy,” uncovers the stories of the comedy explosion during a time where Black comedians were being shut out of many places in Hollywood after the riots.
Torry joins “Start Your Day” to speak about how he provided a platform for many of the successful Black comedians of today.
