Nonfarm payrolls soared by 4.8 million in June and the unemployment rate fell to 11.1% as the U.S. continued its reopening from the coronavirus pandemic.
Donald Trump took a victory lap in a news conference today saying, “Today’s announcement proves that our economy is roaring back. It’s coming back extremely strong.”
He pointed specifically to a sharp drop in the unemployment for Blacks that fell from 16.8% to 15.4%.
Howard University Economist William Spriggs questions whether this is good news for African Americans. He tweeted, “Not sure what Trump is crowing about to the Black community. The unemployment rate for adult Black men rose to 16.3%, its highest level in 9 years. When he took office he inherited the lowest unemployment rate for Black men any incoming President ever started their term with.”
