Lase week, a letter was sent to Donald Trump and signed by six members of Congress addressing his continued attacks on mail in voting. It reads in part,
“We write today in response to your continued attacks on vote-by mail, the American public’s best opportunity to safely participate in the upcoming November elections. Over 4.3 million Americans have been diagnosed with COVID-19, and tragically, nearly 150,000 have died as a result of complications from the virus.While we all hope this crisis will subside quickly, the scientific uncertainty surrounding it necessitates that we take action now to prepare for the safe administration of elections in November in the event that it does not. As president of the United States, you should be ensuring all states, territories, and the District of Columbia have the election administration infrastructure they need so all Americans may exercise their constitutional right to vote without fear of contracting the virus.”
Michigan Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence, who is leading this charge, spoke with Roland Martin on Wednesday about the letter and the attack on the nation’s election system by Donald Trump.
In the letter, Rep. Lawrence also stated, “The right to vote is a key tenet of our democracy.”
She added, “President Trump has continually taken actions to undermine our democracy, so it should come as no surprise that he is spreading false and misleading information about the safest way for Americans to vote during this public health crisis: vote-by-mail. In the midst of a global pandemic, states have rightfully enacted measures to expand vote-by-mail to ensure the protection of both their voters and poll workers. Over the past few months, as states were forced to close polling locations, mask-wearing Americans have waited hours in lines stretching city blocks to cast their votes. While their resilience is laudable, the simple fact remains that no American should be forced to choose between their health and participating in our democracy.”
“Whether by tweet or during an interview, President Trump continues to falsely claim that the 2020 election will be rigged, going so far as to say he may not accept the election results if he loses,” continued Rep. Lawrence. “Instead of peddling baseless conspiracy theories, the administration should encourage all Americans to participate in the upcoming election via mail as we struggle to contain COVID-19. No matter how many times the President repeats his claims, they will not be true. Voting by mail is safe and secure, and any suggestion to the contrary is nothing more than another attempt to suppress the vote of the American people.” [https://bit.ly/39YkSkU]
