On Monday, the Senate Judiciary Committee kicked off the first of four days of confirmation hearings for Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett. There were no questions for Barrett, but instead opening statements by 22 members of the committee. Democrats and Republicans spent this first hearing trading accusations and arguments about Barrett’s ideological views. There was also argument over the propriety of confirming her just weeks before the election.
Senator Kamala Harris delivered delivered a powerful opening statement during the high stakes SCOTUS confirmation hearing in the midst of a pandemic saying, “This hearing has brought together more than 50 people to sit inside of a closed door room for hours, while our nation is facing a deadly airborne virus. This committee has ignored common sense requests to keep people safe … this hearing should have been postponed”
