Maia Chaka made history as the first Black woman named to the National Football League’s officiating staff. As the first Black woman to hold this role in the league’s history, Chaka says she is “honored” to be selected, but the moment is more significant than a personal accomplishment, and it means much more to women, her community and her culture. She joined Start Your Day with Sharon Reed and Mike Hill to discuss the role and how she got there. In an effort to debunk the myth that women are not good at understanding the game of football and sports in general, Chaka says she works hard and continuously studies to make sure she understands the game.
