House Oversight Committee to hear proposal on D.C. statehood

The House Oversight and Reform Committee will hear a proposal being pushed to make Washington D.C. a state. BNC’s Bofta Yimam joined Start Your Day with Sharon Reed and Mike Hill to discuss what the possibility of D.C. becoming a state means for power on Capitol Hill. With Maryland and Virginia becoming states with a strong Democratic presence, this issue of statehood has been propelled to the forefront and is gaining national attention. Black residents in the district have voiced their concerns about the lack of representation. Washinton D.C. has no governor, and residents say they have no input on how money from taxes is used. During the deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol in January, the mayor, Muriel Bowser, had no authority to call in the National Guard for assistance. If the district becomes a state, it could shift the power of Congress with two senators and one representative. Puerto Rico will be watching closely as a majority of voters have shown support for a referendum to make the territory a state.
