Ben Jealous, President of the People For the American Way, was the youngest national president and chief executive officer of the NAACP. The champion for civil rights, who has been on the front line fighting for social justice for decades, joined Start Your Day with Sharon Reed and Mike Hill. When it comes to voting rights, the People For the American Way is fighting to ensure the right to vote for all Americans. Jealous says there is hope that federal legislation will be passed to undo laws, like Georgia’s SB 202, that restrict voting rights. Citing the filibuster holding up the vote, Jealous said it should be eliminated. “The filibuster was created in Jim Crow to slow down civil rights legislation. Chuck Schumer quite frankly needs to get rid of the filibuster because we cannot have what was created to make Jim Crow possible kept in place to make Jm Crow 2.0 possible.”
