David Rush, a recording artist and producer from New Jersey, is used to writing about his life. One of his biggest hits titled “Shooting Star,” is one of the songs written about himself, but now he’s singing a different tune to warn others about the risk and dangers of kidney disease, which affects Black people at a higher rate than other groups according to the National Kidney Foundation. Rush joined “Start Your Day” with Mike Hill to talk about the disease. He said he knew something was wrong in high school when doctors found a large amount of protein in his urine. He was treated with medication, but the disease progressed through college. “It starts with our diet. It starts with the things we are eating,” he said, citing the need to change foods popular in the Black community. Rush said he is sharing his journey to prevent others from battling the disease.
