For decades in America, sunsets were a grim reminder for Black people that they were entering the most dangerous time of day. This was especially prevalent during the late 1800s and throughout the mid-1900s. Sundown ordinances were passed across the United States to forbid Black people from being in some towns after sundown. Those towns became known as “Sundown Towns.” In some cases, a siren would sound to let Black people know they needed to leave. A law in Nevada that recently passed, bans “sundown sirens” in the state. It also bans racially discriminatory mascots, songs and logos.
