Acknowledging Native Americans on Native American Heritage Day

Native American Heritage Day is traditionally commemorated the day after Thanksgiving.

It is a time to highlight the contributions of Native Americans and the richness of their cultures. For example, the U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland made history when she became the first Native American to serve as a Cabinet Secretary. She’s a 35th generation New Mexican and a member of the Pueblo of Laguna.

Despite the reasons to celebrate, the timing of Native American Heritage Day is viewed by many with mixed emotions.

Vincent Schilling, associate editor at Indian Country Today, joins Kelly Wright on β€œThe World Tonight” to discuss.
