Afghanistan Evacuation Marks End of U.S. 20 Year Presence

Pentagon officials have announced that the final military planes have officially departed Afghanistan.

President Joe Biden’s evacuation efforts have met the Aug. 31 withdrawal deadline, but it came at a huge cost. More than 180 Afghans and 13 American service members lost their lives in last week’s attack near Kabul’s airport.

Gen. Kenneth McKenzie of the U.S. Central Command said that the U.S. military “did not get everybody out that we wanted to get out.” The final departure marks the first time in nearly 20 years that the U.S. has not had troops on the ground in Afghanistan.

Jeremy Butler, CEO of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, joins Charles Blow on β€œPrime” to discuss the involvement in Afghanistan.

All this and more on β€œPrime.”
