Montgomery’s bus boycott was a pivotal moment in Black history and a catalyst for the civil rights movement.
Sparked by the arrest of Rosa Parks, this event is heralded as a milestone that signaled to all Americans the power of peaceful protest and the might of Black economic leverage.
After 381 days of organized resistance, the boycott ended on this day in 1956.
Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr., president of The Montgomery Improvement Association, gave a speech the following day calling for a vote which was unanimously carried to end the demonstration. This returned Black people to the buses on a non-segregated basis.
