“How do you make amends for an advantage that you’ve had in disenfranchising a race of people for 143 years … Where do you make amends?” – Eric Wesson, Managing Editor, Kansas City The Call
The Kansas City Star is apologizing for decades of racist coverage of Kansas City, Missouri.
Mike Fannin who has been the Kansas City Star’s editor since 2008 wrote in a letter to readers the newspaper “disenfranchised, ignored and scorned generations of Black Kansas Citians. It reinforced Jim Crow laws and redlining.”
Reporters took a look through the Newspaper’s archives and found the paper usually painted Black people as perpetrators and rarely covered issues that Black people faced. For instance the paper covered military actions overseas but not the bombings of Black families that occurred not too far from the Paper’s location.
Fannin said the death of George Floyd earlier this year and the protests that took place around the world made the paper examine its history and how it covers issues plaguing the black community.
