Schools across the United States are ready to reopen and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expected to release new guidelines about social distancing requirements for classrooms. Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers, joined Start Your Day with Sharon Reed and Mike Hill to discuss how teachers’ unions play a part in the reopening plan. She says she is concerned about the lack of space available for teachers in schools. When asked about the rhetoric about teachers during the coronavirus pandemic, she said, “vilification of teachers is something that’s out of the GOP playbook for a long time now.” Citing, the history of teachers’ unions, she said rich people don’t want regular working people to have any power. The American Federation of Teachers is an affiliate of the AFL-CIO that represents about 1.7 million teachers nationwide.
