Bessie Blount was a pioneering nurse, physical therapist and wartime inventor of an automatic feed tube, which drastically improved the quality of life for injured veterans.
She came up with the brilliant idea for an electronic device that dispenses food without the person needing to use their hands.
Called an invalid feeder, a person would simply bite down on a rubber tube to activate a motor, and then liquified food would be dispensed through a spoon-shaped mouthpiece.
Blount continued to develop other life-changing devices, including a portable receptacle support, which allowed a person with arm injuries to hold something close to oneβs face.
