President Joe Biden is backing away from a campaign pledge that would have addressed police officers and excessive force through a White House-led police commission. BNC Correspondent Bofta Yimam joined “Start Your Day” with Sharon Reed and Mike Hill to discuss the Biden administration’s shift in focus. The administration is now saying legislation would better address officers using excessive force rather than another commission meant to research policing. This decision comes after the administration spoke with civil rights leaders and police unions. Biden plans to focus efforts on passing police reform through legislative channels like signing the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. The bill, which narrowly passed in the House, has been in the Senate for about a month. It focuses on improving law enforcement accountability, will establish a framework to prevent racial profiling and restrict the use of no-knock warrants and chokeholds.
