Eleven-time NBA champion Bill Russell will be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach after getting in as a player almost five decades ago.
He will become the fifth man in history to receive the double honor. Russell won two NBA championships with the Boston Celtics as a player-coach in 1968 and 1969, a role he held for three seasons.
Russell marched with Dr. King, used his platform to speak out against racism, became an active member of the NAACP and backed landmark legislations Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his humanitarian works in 2011.
