In Georgia, a Black federal judge ruled against Fair Fight Action, the voting rights group founded by Georgia Democratic gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams.
The Lawsuit accused Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, then secretary of state, of using his position as the state’s top elections official to promote voter suppression.
U.S. District Judge Steve Jones, an Obama appointee, ruled in favor of the state. Judge Jones found that Georgia’s election practices do not violate voters’ constitutional rights.
Judge Jones issued the following statement about this case:
“Although Georgia’s election system is not perfect, the challenged practices violate neither the constitution nor the VRA. This is a voting rights case that resulted in wins and losses for all parties throughout the litigation and culminated in what is believed to have been the longest voting rights bench trial in the history of the Northern District of Georgia.”
