At the start of day four in the jury selection for the Derek Chauvin trial, five jurors have been selected, leaving 7 more to be chosen. BNC legal expert Candace Kelley appeared on Start Your Day to discuss the possibility of Chauvin facing possible new charges and the selection of a Black juror.
Trial Judge Peter Cahill announced in court on Wednesday that the Minnesota Supreme Court won’t intervene on a third-degree murder charge in the case. Kelley said this action will count when jurors are in the deliberation room.
“They can figure out if something is too extreme or too little,” she said. “Now we have something that is right in the middle in terms of how long this former officer Chauvin could send in jail. Before, we had the option of 10 years versus 40 years. Now we got a 25-year option, and this makes prosecutors very happy.”
Start Your Day co-host Sharon Reed brought up that a Black man has finally been selected as a juror in this trial, which has overt racial implications. The juror is a married immigrant who has been in the U.S. for 14 years, he is an IT manager and has lived by the scene of the crime. However, he is open-minded about the situation.
“You’re not sure what way he will go even though he is a Black man,” Kelley told Reed. “I think both sides, for the prosecution and the defense, they both feel they have the opportunity to sway him one way or the other.”
She highlighted how Black immigrants are seen to have a different experience than Black people in America.
