The film “Concrete Cowboy” debuts on Netflix Friday, starring Idris Elba, Caleb McLaughlin, Method Man and Jharrel Jerome. BNC’s Astrid Martinez joined “Start Your Day” with Sharon Reed and Mike Hill to talk about the film and her conversation with McLaughlin and the movie’s director Ricky Staub. Despite one in four cowboys being Black, the Western genre has little diversity. “Concrete Cowboy” brings the life of urban cowboys to the big screen. The movie tells the story of a young boy sent to Philadelphia to spend the summer with his estranged father. Elba, who plays the father, attempts to convince his son to join the tradition of Black urban horseback riders. McLaughlin said the representation of Black fathers and sons is essential. “What’s beautiful about this story is that this relationship was built,” McLaughlin said. The director said he became inspired to create the film after meeting members of the Fletcher Street Cowboys.
