Celebrating Former Capitol Officer Eugene Goodman

Capitol Police officer Eugene Goodman came face-to-face with agitators who descended on the Capitol.

He directed the unruly crowd away from Senate chambers and towards police backup that was standing by. Security footage also showed Goodman ushering Mitt Romney to safety amidst the uproar.

Goodman found himself the lone officer standing between the rioters and members of Congress who had not yet evacuated. His swift actions may have prevented more bloodshed.

Millions of people saw video of Goodman’s actions and he later became a symbol of heroism.

He escorted Vice President Kamala Harris to last year’s inauguration ceremony and later received the Congressional Gold Medal, one of the nation’s highest honors for his bravery.
