On this day in 1975, the sitcom “The Jeffersons,” a spinoff from “All in the Family,” premiered on CBS.
In a rare case of spinoff success, “The Jeffersons” would surpass its parent show in popularity and air 253 episodes in 11 seasons.
The show centers its plot around Black business owners George and Louise “Weezy” Jefferson, who move into a “deluxe apartment in the sky” after finding considerable success with a Manhattan dry cleaning business.
With comedy as its Trojan horse, “The Jeffersons” for over a decade brought conversations about race, stereotypes and equality into American living rooms.
