This year’s National University Teacher of the Year, Alejandro Diasgranados, found out he won the coveted award on national television. Actress Drew Barrymore delivered the honors. Diasgranados, known to his students as Mr. Dias, joined “Start Your Day” with Sharon Reed and Mike Hill to discuss his win. He is a fourth and fifth-grade teacher in Washington D.C. and received $50,000 with his award. He said winning the award has been incredible during such a tough year for teachers. Diasgranados said his students encouraged him and they watched each other develop through life. Five years into his career as a teacher, he helped implement changes in his school. Having a teacher who looked like him convinced him to go to Virginia State University and give back to his community by educating students. Diasgranados said his job is not just to teach students but to make sure they have everything they need to be successful in life.
