Sharon Reed and Mike Hill discuss Black actors big wins at the 2021 Golden Globes on Sunday, which was held virtually due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The Start Your Day co-hosts shed light on the lack of Black members within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization responsible for nominations.
As Tina Fey and Amy Poehler opened the program, Poehler said, ” a number of Black actors and Black-led projects were overlooked.” As the HFPA dealt with criticism over diversity, singer-songwriter Andra Day, actor Daniel Kaluuya, the Pixar animated film Soul, and actor John Boyega took home awards in various categories.
The late Chadwick Boseman, who died from colon cancer in August 2020, also won for his performance in Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. His widow Taylor Simone Ledward accepted the award on his behalf and spoke about his craft in an emotional and touching speech.
