As Charles Blow mentioned on βPrimeβ earlier in the show, the Texas Senate passed a bill to eliminate requirements that public schools teach about the Klu Klux Klan because it is “morally wrong.”
Since the early 20th century, Southerners fought to remove any information that did not support the Confederacy relating to slavery, Civil War and the Reconstruction. In June of 1944, a delegation of Black leaders, including the NAACP, met with New York City school officials to discuss history textbooks.
Black activists pressured school boards and publishers throughout the 1960s, while white conservatives countered with the argument that any negative material about their own past would harm their mental health.
