Charles Blow talks to Judge Glenda Hatchett about the racial disparities in the U.S. maternal mortality rate.
The U.S. has the highest rate of infant and maternal deaths in any high-income country and the Black women are four to five times likelier to have a pregnancy-related death.
Hatchett opens up about her daughter in law who died during childbirth.
βShe would have had a greater rate of survival had she been giving birth in some third world country,β Hatchett says. βShe was healthy; she was diligent about prenatal care. She did everything right, but they didnβt listen.β
