Charles Blow on Rising Violence in Some Cities Puts 1994 Crime Bill Back in Focus

Charles Blow talks to AbrenΓ© Clayton, lead reporter for the Guns and Lies in America project at the Guardian, about the rising crime in some cities across the country. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has asked the Biden administration to send federal troops to her city to help decrease the violence.

The increase in violence has some calling for a new crime bill, thrusting the 1994 crime bill back into the spotlight, which had a detrimental impact on the Black community.

β€œWhat I’m most worried about is, what we’re seeing is another overreaction to gun violence and that is focusing almost exclusively on punishment, and not dealing with the trauma of poor people already beset with problems that were compounded by [COVID-19],” Blow says.

All this and more on β€œPrime.”
