Marc Morial, president of the National Urban League, said, “Democracy is under the kind of attack we have not seen since the Jim Crow days.” After Morial and other civil rights leaders met with Senator Joe Manchin earlier this week, Manchin continued to say he would oppose legislation already approved by the House of Representatives that protects or expands Americans’ right to vote. Morial spoke of a time when poll taxes, literacy tests and other systemic efforts were taken to keep Black citizens from voting. These are things Fannie Lou Hamer fought against on June 9, 1963. She was instrumental in leading efforts to organize progressive movements in Mississippi.ย ย
