Chauvin May Face Longer Sentence After Judge Rules on Aggravating Factors

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who was convicted on all charges for the murder of George Floyd, could face a longer sentence. Judge Peter Cahill ruled Chauvin abused a position of trust and treated Floyd with “particular cruelty.” The judge also said other aggravating factors include the presence of children and the fact that the crime had participation from a group. BNC Legal Expert Candace Kelley joined “Start Your Day” with Sharon Reed and Mike Hill to discuss what this means for sentencing. Kelley said the sentence is up to Cahill’s discretion but Chauvin will face more than 12-and-a-half years in prison.
