City of Evanston approves reparations for eligible Black residents

Evanston, Illinois has become the first city in the country to offer reparations to eligible Black residents.

Payments of $25,000 starting this spring will be made available to eligible residents for housing purposes. Black residents in the city were often impacted by racist policies such as redlining.

Taxes from recreational marijuana sales will fund the $10 million for the next decade.

Some remain skeptical of the city’s proposal. Start Your Day host Mike Hill says that the proposal will face challenges, while Sharon Reed believes that while the $25,000 isn’t enough but that this is a promising start.

β€œWe have to start looking at it as If it is real,” Reed says. β€œWe deserve it.”
