A University of Texas at Austin report will find on Tuesday that the controversial school song “Eyes of Texas” does not have any racist intent. Last summer, UT Austin athletes demanded the university address the song and the school’s racist history.
Clarence Hill Jr., senior sportswriter for Fort Worth Star-Telegram, appeared on Start Your Day to discuss the controversy. He revealed that the song references Confederate leader Robert E. Lee’s words, “the eyes of the south are on you,” which reads like a threat to slaves.
Hill Jr. also said the song was first performed during minstrel shows on UT campus. The sportswriter believes the racist undertones of the song cannot just be ignored. βYou canβt put the genie back in the bottle. We know what the song is about now, and itβs wrong.β
